American Bars Obituary: Patrick’s of Pratt Street,
Patrick's of Pratt Street, one of Baltimore's oldest bars, has closed
The Baltimore bar had claimed to be the country's oldest Irish pub. Founded in 1847, Patrick's of Pratt Street (934 W. Pratt St., Hollins Market) is now for sale with a banner covering up the once familiar signage of owner Patrick Rowley.
Rowley owned the bar with his wife, Anne ("the boss"), since 1999 -- an auction date for all the equipment will be set soon. "I'm almost 70," said Rowley, who can be found behind the bar nearly every night. "I'm too old for carrying drinks."
Founded by Rowley's "great, great Uncle Patrick" Healey, the bar had been continuously owned and operated by the family since it opened, according to the its website.
Under the Rowleys, Patrick's has been known for many things, including its crab cakes, cappuccinos and wine selection. The small space also hosts live Irish music.
A Sun dining review from 2006 described Patrick's as "remarkably uncluttered, especially when one considers all the history it contains within its walls. It's also blessedly free of cutesy four-leaf clovers and dancing leprechauns, even in the days surrounding St. Patrick's Day."
Rowley said he's leaving the bar business but will continue his other job with his wife -- selling trips to Ireland.
