It has been a while, but another historic bar is shuttering its doors forever. Kay’s Lounge, a more-than-75-year-old Houston bar is making its last call.

Developer Kays Partners LLC (which lends suspicious thought to the procedures) purchased the land where Kay's Lounge is located in 2015, according to the Harris County Appraisal District. The developer acquired the three nearby lots of land from Hef Maf LP, a partnership between brothers Duane and Marshall Hefley and David Mafrige, according to HCAD. One of the lots is the land under Kay's Lounge.

In 2016, the three lots of land were appraised for about $2 million, per HCAD.

The developer terminated Kay's Lounge's lease Aug. 1, according to a source. Last call at the bar is planned for 2 a.m. Sept. 3.

The new owners and their plans were not immediately available. The Hefley brothers have run the bar since 2001.

The bar opened around 1939, according to Kay's Facebook page. The watering hole — a legendary joint and a longtime haunt for Rice University students and alumni — is hailed by Kay's as Houston's oldest.

"A heartfelt 'thank you' all of Kay's customers for your years of loyal patronage," a recent post on the bar's Facebook page reads.

The current bar building was built in 1944, according to Harris County property records. The bar was named after Kay, the original ownership family's daughter. The local hangout in the West University neighborhood has attracted an eclectic mix of Houstonians over the years and features a Texas-shaped table.
