Who needs to drink in the airport when you can imbibe in the air instead?

There’s a reason gentlemen once donned their sharpest blazers and ladies their finest dresses to take to the friendly skies. Flying was once a rare, serendipitous experience. Airlines relished the opportunity to make flying memorable, maximizing creature comforts in the air with on-board lounges, smoking sections and bars, not to mention those fantastic pilots wings they once gifted to excited children. The journey mattered. Since that iconic Pan Am "golden age," four decades have passed where baggage fees replaced bars and legroom needs replaced any concept of lounges. A few airlines liked the old days better, and are bringing back perhaps the greatest novelty (that would be the bar, of course) in air travel, one tipple at a time.

    Qatar Airways A380

Qatar Airways offers one of the largest and most refined bar and lounge areas for business and first class passengers. Not only can you buckle into one of their swanky lounge sofas, you can also indulge in items from their extensive bar menu, selected by top sommeliers, to match your six-mile-high taste buds, and you’ll also find gourmet snacks like sushi bites with smoked salmon creme frâiche and decadent chocolate mousse pods.

    Emirates A380

If that bar looks familiar, it’s most likely because you saw it in the Emirates commercial starring Jennifer Aniston. In the real world, Emirates has a gorgeous bar and lounge area where a mixologist is on hand to make cocktails. If you’re a first class passenger, they’ll even put a bottle of Dom Perignon on ice just for you.

    Virgin Australia + Virgin Atlantic

For direct flights between the U.S. and the U.K. or Australia, there’s only one place to find a bar at 30,000 feet. Virgin Australia and Virgin Atlantic offer swanky new bars on board all flights for business class passengers, and when the fasten seatbelt sign isn’t on, you can pop a cork and grab some crisps (that’s "potato chips" to Americans).

    Etihad A380

Of course the airline that built an actual private apartment “residence,” complete with shower, on a commercial airplane wouldn't forget to install a bar to match. Etihad offers a sleek, lacquered dark wood James Bond-style bar where business, first class and residence passengers can sample the airlines extensive cellar.

    Korean Air A380

Korean Air has created the “Celestial Bar” in partnership with Absolut vodka. Though oenophiles will need to remain in their seats to enjoy the airline's wine selection, cocktail enthusiasts can head over to the bar to check out drinks like the Asian Ginger (vanilla, ginger and lychee), or the Absolut Pear Deluxe (pear, apple, citrus, and Champagne).

With so many inspired options and opportunities to experience at these exclusive dens in the sky using miles or clever discounted flight opportunities, the only question is which bar to cozy up to for a night out in the sky. After all, they're driving.
